Amorgos Sailing 2015

Amorgos an other beautiful Cycladic island! It took it’s name from a plant called  “Amorgis” a flax variety. Located at the east side of Cycladic complex and it is about 136 miles away from peiraeus. A coastline of 126kilometers and an area of 121 square kilometers are waiting for you to explore step by step! You will also find to natural ports Katapola and Aigiali with the first to be the main one and the most protected from weather conditions.   Decide the way you want to visit this island and you will  be amazed. Ferry from peiraeus or your own boat?
It is a good question where we can answer you! If you go with ferry, you will need a place to stay overnight and also find a way to move around the island. If you do not have any friends there you will need a hotel or rental room. If you also want to move around you can choose between, taxi, local transportations or car/bike rentals. Except the money you will need for all of these, count that you will get tired soon. If you go with your own boat (rental or your own) you will have a place to stay, cook and do whatever you want and the most important! You can go wherever you want around the island and visit places that are accessible only from sea. Of course you will need to find other way to visit some sightseens but the cost is too small to be afraid of. Count the which way is better for you and if you finally decide about your own boat, ask yachtsailing.gr about more!

When you finally arrive you will not see a “huge” town or something very big. Amorgos is divided into small villages and settlements. Your first stop should be Katapola as it is the main port as we said and the most “crowded” let’s say point of island and the one where you can find the most things to buy.
We moored our boat after 13 hours of sailing adventures at the Aegean we moored out boat at the port we said above and we have been out for a walk to calm down and also find a place for lunch!  We visited Diosmarimi as locals suggested us and we were very satisfied with the dishes we taste and also with the prices!

After lunch we have been for a walk to the main road of the port an then we decided to visit “Chora” of Amorgos. It was something more than beautiful! A classic Cycladic city full of white and blue classic buildings! We visited “Gavras tower” a really interesting place to visit!
Based on Venetian architecture of 16th century.  You will also find many interesting churches while exploring amorgos. They are all unique with a history written for them!  Ask locals and you will understand more!  Other interesting places.  Katapola and  Aigiali has also many interesting places to explore but do not miss at “Kato Meria” the “Acropolis of Amorgos” or “Acropolis of Arkesini”! Maybe the most high altitude of the island make it ideal for the ancient years to be the most important spot of the island due to the view it gives you generously to the Aegean sea.

We have been exploring th island for many hours by local transportation but there is nothing better than exploring with your boat. So the next day we decided to leave the ground of Amorgos and explore the sea around the island! We visited many beaches and they were all amazing. From where to start ?  Maybe “Agia Anna” was one from the best choises! Crystal clear waters with golden sand mixed with pebbles are really amazing. There is also a church near with the same name! About 3 miles away from “Chora”.  Not a very big beach but you will bea amazed with the landscape! Our next stop is Agios pavlos. Amagical beach with white sand and crystal clear blue waters!  We believe that you already have been to Aigiali and except walking you have been visited the amazing beach! It is one of the biggest and well known beaches in amorgos and it is really magical! Blue transparent waters with amazing sang make this beach ideal for relaxing for sunbathing under the greek hot sun! It is an organized beach with many interesting points near like café’s, taverns and bars an it is not very crowded!

Near there there is also Nevrosos beach where you will find a pebbled coast at the one side of an amazing bay. Ideal to relax with friends during the night and enjoy the sky full of stars!
Maltezi-Katapola, a beach reached only from water. You are lucky if you have your own boat but if not you do not have to worry because there is a sea taxi only for this beach! Visit Katapola and the side pier of the port and you will find many boats where every 30 minutes leave for this destination! There is a small fee you pay during your way to this amazing bay.

We hope you took a taste about what to expect from the beaches from Amorgos. They are all one by one unique and the only sure thing is that you want many time to explore them all. Sure there are many more we did not reach because we ran out of time but we hope next time to visit more.

We forget to tell you that near the port there are stands with some leaflets showing a map and interesting points of Amorgos! It is a blue folded leaflet shared every morning at many spots of Amorgos and if you are lucky and they do not run out just some minutes after they fill the stand you will take one.

Prices per person  10-15€ with very good service! Also “Capetan Dimos” is an other traditional Greek food tavern you must meet! Fresh fish and seafood for all of you in great prices!  Do you know “Le grand Bleu” movie filmed on Ios island?
