Poros greek island sailing tour

sailing poros vacation

This time we visited Poros! One of the most well known and visited islands of Saronic Gulf, and also one of the best sailing destinations!  Also called “Kalavria” at ancient years. Its population is about 3993 people and it’s area is about 22.9 square kilometers! Also known for the lemon tree forest neat at “Galatas”.
Just few hours from Athens reachable with high speed ferry from Piraeus  or by car up to “Galatas” and then with ferry boat. An ideal location to escape from Athens just to relax and leave behind all the rush of the city! If you choose the sailing way you just need 3-4 hours for the 60 miles of your trip!

When you arrive you will notice yourself that the port of this island is one of the biggest you can find! Maybe some city ports would love to be like this! Plenty space for many sailing boats, ferries and all other floating vehicles! Due to the popularity of this destination sometimes you may not find to moor your boat at the port and your other choice is to anchor your boat near the port and reach the coast with your dinghy!

Poros is a really interesting island that you must explore! The best start point is as we already said the port! Walk through the road next of the port and you will find amazing gift shops and not only to explore!  Create a shopping list, buy all the stuff you need and go back to your boat to get ready for a really unique experience!
This small island has many sightseens to visit and one of the best to start from  is the archaeological museum at Korizi Square near the port! A unique place that can travel you through the history of poros with ancient frescoes, traditional uniforms, tools and many more things!
Except this museum a must see, just some steps away from the port is Ergani Workshop.

A really amazing place with handmade textiles of all kinds! You will find traditional long-haired handmade blankets, small carpets, small dolls ideal for a gift at small children and many more. As you may understand there are some items available for purchase! If you find something you like just ask about it!

We are sure that you will explore your self this island so do not miss Temple of Poseidon at “Agios Nektarios” , Monastery of “Zoodochos pigi” at a unique place with amazing view,  Russian bay at the western of the island, a really amazing and historical place of Poros!
There you will find an organized beach with a small cantine and some amazing historical buildings from ancient years with unique architecture! If you visit Poros with a boat, try also to visit “Bourtzi” a small castle on an isle next to Poros! It is located there since 1827 built from a Bavarian Phihellene.

When you have your own boat  you have more choices! There are many idyllic bays at poros where are accessible only from sea! Try to cruise around the island and you will discover it yourself!  As we already said poros is a well known sailing destination in Greece!

During your trip you may also feel hungry so do not miss to visit “Apagio Tavern” where you will find traditional Greek dishes and not only! Very friendly staff and everything is cooked just after your request! You also have other choices like “Poseidon Tavern” which is ideal for fresh fish, “Meze Meze” if you like to enjoy your meal next of the sea waves and the one and only, “Petros tavern” One of the oldest taverns you will find in Poros! We may forget to tell you that we have been to Poros many times at past years and this tavern is really our favorite!  Traditional dishes that will make you feel like you are cooking yourself at home, delicious appetizers and original Greek red wine! If you combine it with the great prices it is the best value for money and quality!

The truth is that if you do not visit poros you may not understand how this island really is!

It is let’s say small but it is really so big! Amazing people, amazing landscape, amazing sightseens, it is truly Greek! Just decide the way you want to visit poros and do not think it twice! Just do it! We suggest you to do it with a sailing yacht as we did it.  It really worth it as you can explore the whole island whenever you want! We would suggest you www.yachtsailing.gr as we prefer it for our charter boats, as we have mentioned many times they are really professionals! Well experienced staff that will satisfy all your needs for all over Greece sailing expectations! We usually use yachtsailing.gr’s service for our most sailing trips.

We hope you find our experiences really interesting and meet the same soon!
